At People4Utah, our mission is to activate the political power that Utahns have been granted constitutionally. Article 1 of Utah’s constitution states: “All political power is inherent in the people; and all free governments are founded on their authority for their equal protection and benefit, and they have the right to alter or reform their government as the public welfare may require.” Article I, Section 3
We honor our representative democracy form of government and are grateful for those willing to spend their time in public service. We recognize that for a representative democracy to be most effective, all citizens must be invited to fully participate in the process. Yet, despite “all political power” being constitutionally granted to the people, Utah’s party-oriented, closed-door election system has resulted in only 0.16% to 17% of eligible voters participating in determining the candidates who win 81% of elections. This has led to many Utahns feeling disenfranchised and disempowered.
People4Utah’s mission is to invite all to become empowered to participate in our political system. We will do this in a two-fold way, focusing on both strengthening the individual to successfully navigate the system, and advocating for changes to the system to be more inviting to the individual. We have a plan to listen to, gather, inspire, and empower the people of Utah, reigniting their hope and involvement in their representative democracy.
We believe that many individuals are not aware of the influence they can have on their government and the policies that impact their daily lives. Our programs reach out to the individual, enlivening their constitutionally granted power through workshop-oriented education and support.
Through our listening lab program, we will provide a platform for individuals to share their thoughts, concerns, and ideas. By doing so, we aim to gather a diverse range of perspectives and build a more inclusive democracy. By asking participants to help us spread the listening lab program throughout the state, we also invite people to discover the power of influence they already have through their existing social networks.
Through our large events that invite both individual citizens and existing organization representatives, we invite Utahns to see they are not alone in their desire for a more inclusive representative democracy.
Through our “be heard” workshop program, we will provide the tools and support needed for individuals to gain confidence to have their voices heard in the political process. This program is offered with leveled offering for different levels of interest.
Empowering individuals is key, but it’s not enough. Through research and advocacy, we aim to reduce the roadblocks placed in the existing system that prevent individuals from exercising their power.
To achieve these goals, we rely on the support of individuals like you. Your tax-deductible donation will help us strengthen our efforts to educate disenfranchised voters on how they can make their voices heard. Whether through our listening lab program, workshops, or diverse events, your support will make a tangible difference in creating a statewide movement of engaged citizens who desire to use their power to shape the future of their community. Please consider donating to People4Utah and become part of a game-changing movement.
